The Helloween guide

Helloween is a co-op haunted-mansion game for 1 to 8 players in the browser. This page covers how to play, how rooms work, and exactly how the $HELLOWEEN rewards are earned and claimed.

Quick start

  1. Open Play, press Connect wallet and pick your wallet.
  2. Press Sign in (free) and sign the short message in your wallet. It is a signature, not a transaction: no gas, no approval.
  3. Type a nickname, then press Create room (you are the host) or type a friend's 6-character code and press Join room.
  4. The host picks a difficulty and presses Start the run.
  5. Find the key on each floor, unlock the stairs, answer the Riddle Gate, and beat the boss on the last floor.

Controls

Desktop (keyboard and mouse)

MoveW A S D or the arrow keys
AimMouse pointer. If you have not moved the mouse for a few seconds, your arrows auto-aim at the nearest monster you can see.
ShootLeft click, Space or J (hold to keep firing, about three arrows a second)
DashShift, K or right click. A short burst of speed; you cannot be hurt during it. About one second cooldown.
Riddle answersClick an answer or press 1 to 4

Phone and tablet

  • Turn the device sideways (landscape). Upright works too, but the view is cramped; the game asks you to rotate.
  • Left side: put your thumb anywhere and drag. A virtual joystick appears under your thumb.
  • Right side: hold SHOOT to fire, tap DASH to dodge. Aiming is automatic: arrows fly at the nearest monster in sight.
  • The page does not scroll or zoom while you play. Use Full in the top-right corner for fullscreen.
  • Sound starts after your first tap. The speaker button mutes; the slider sets the volume, and both are remembered on this device.

Rooms and share links

  • Every game happens in a room. The host gets a 6-character code (letters and digits, without look-alikes such as 0/O or 1/I) and a link like helloween.app/r/CODE.
  • Friends join with the link or by typing the code on the Play page, after connecting a wallet and signing in. Up to 8 players per room. Playing alone is a room of one.
  • One wallet holds one seat per room. Opening the same room again with the same wallet (another tab or device) moves your seat there; it never adds a second player.
  • The lobby shows everyone with their short wallet address and who is the host. The host chooses the difficulty, can remove a player, and starts the run.
  • Nobody can join a run that has already started. When the run ends, the host can take everyone back to the lobby for another round.
  • If your connection drops, the game keeps your seat for 60 seconds and reconnects you automatically (also after a page reload in the same tab).
  • If the host leaves, the next player becomes host. Rooms that sit idle in the lobby for 15 minutes close by themselves.

Difficulties

DifficultyFloorsRiddle timerVictory rewardNotes
Easy320 snone (practice)3 floors. Practice run: softer monsters, wider lantern light. No token reward.
Normal415 s500 $HELLOWEEN, once per wallet4 floors ending with the Skeleton King. Counts for the victory reward.
Nightmare512 s1,000 $HELLOWEEN, once per wallet5 floors, tougher monsters, a smaller lantern, and the Grim Reaper after the King falls.

The last floor of every difficulty is the boss floor. More players means more monsters and tougher bosses, so a full room is not a free ride.

The mansion

  • Every run builds new floors from a random seed: rooms, corridors, monsters, candles and the key change each time.
  • It is dark. Each player carries a lantern; you see what is inside its light. Playing together lights up more of the mansion.
  • The key (gold) is somewhere on the floor. Whoever picks it up unlocks the doors for the whole team.
  • The stairs (green glow) sit behind the locked doors. When anyone with the team's key steps on them, the floor ends and the Riddle Gate opens.
  • Soul candles (green flames) give 25 points and heal 10 HP.
  • Downed? At 0 HP you fall but you are not out. A teammate standing on you for 2.5 seconds brings you back at 50 HP. Everyone who is down gets up at the next floor. If the whole team is down at once, the run is lost.

Monsters

Bat
Fast and erratic. Weaves in a zig-zag toward the nearest light.
10 points
Slime Abomination
Hops in bursts. Splits into two slimelets when it pops.
20 points
Ghost Wraith
Drifts straight through walls. Hard to see outside your lantern.
25 points
Spider Monster
Waits in ambush, lunges, and spits webs that slow you down.
25 points
Candle Fiend
Keeps its distance and throws fireballs. Close in or shoot from cover.
20 points
Flying Pumpkin
Dives at you and bursts after a short fuse. Shoot it early or dash away.
15 points
Mimic Chest
Looks like a treasure chest until you get close. Drops extra candles.
40 points
Pumpkin Golem
Slow tank. Glows, winds up, then charges in a straight line. Dash sideways.
45 points
Scarecrow Giant
Barely moves, but calls bats to its side. Take it down first.
40 points
Werewolf Behemoth
Pounces every few seconds. Appears on deeper floors.
50 points

Deeper floors bring the tougher ones: ghosts and spiders from floor 2, golems and scarecrows from floor 3, werewolves from floor 4.

Bosses

Skeleton King

  • Phase 1: walks toward the closest player and throws fans of bones.
  • Phase 2 (below two thirds of his health): rings of bones in every direction and summoned bats and flying pumpkins.
  • Phase 3 (below one third): faster, denser rings, and a ground slam marked by a red circle. Get out of the circle.
  • Pillars in the throne hall block bones. The King walks right past them.

Grim Reaper (Nightmare only)

  • Rises when the King falls. The run is won only when the Reaper is down too.
  • Fades out and reappears beside a player (purple mark), then sweeps its scythe (red circle). Dash away.
  • Sends slow homing soul orbs. It cannot be hit while faded.

Riddle Gates

  • Between floors, every player sees the same Halloween riddle with four answers at the same time.
  • You get one answer. The gate closes when everyone has answered or the timer runs out.
  • Correct: 500 points plus up to 500 more the faster you answered. Wrong: -100 points. No answer: 0.
  • Then the right answer is shown with what everyone earned, and the next floor opens. There are 80 riddles and a run never repeats one.

Scoring

Your score = monster points (for the player who lands the killing arrow) + 25 per soul candle + riddle points + 50 for picking up a key + 50 per teammate revived. It never goes below zero. The live scoreboard sits in the top-right corner, and the podium at the end shows everyone's totals. Scores are computed by the game server: the browser only sends your movement, aim and button presses.

Wallet and sign-in (needed to play)

Every player needs a connected, signed-in wallet to create or join a room. Why:

  • Rewards: the victory and daily rewards go to the wallet that played, so the game has to know it before the run starts.
  • One wallet, one seat: nobody can fill a room with extra tabs of themselves, and a second tab with your wallet simply takes your seat back.
  • A fair leaderboard: one row per wallet, scored by the game server.
  1. On Play (or a share link) press Connect wallet. Pick a browser wallet (MetaMask, Rabby, OKX, Coinbase Wallet…) or WalletConnect where this site offers it. Phantom cannot add Robinhood Chain; use another wallet.
  2. Press Sign in (free). Your wallet shows a plain text message. Signing it is free, sends nothing, approves nothing and needs no ETH. It proves the wallet is yours to the game server for 7 days.
  3. Type a nickname and create or join. Your short address shows next to your name in the lobby, the scoreboard and the podium.

On a phone: phone browsers have no wallet built in. Open the site inside your wallet app's own browser (the Play page has "Open in MetaMask / OKX Wallet / Coinbase Wallet / Trust Wallet" buttons), or use WalletConnect when it is configured here. Claiming later needs Robinhood Chain (chain id 4663); your wallet asks to add it the first time.

If your sign-in expires during a run, you keep playing and keep your seat (also after a reconnect). You only sign again before joining your next room.

Leaderboard

  • The game server records every run when it ends: a win, a loss, or you leaving mid-run. It stores your wallet, nickname, difficulty, score, floors cleared, run time and whether the run won. Nothing your browser sends is counted.
  • Boards on the Leaderboard page: top score (your best single run), most clears (runs won) and fastest win (shortest winning run, start to final boss), for each difficulty, for today (from 00:00 UTC), this week (from Monday 00:00 UTC) and all time. One row per wallet; ties go to whoever got there first.
  • Wallets that claimed a victory reward on chain are marked. The leaderboard pays nothing by itself.

Reward rules

Victory: 500 $HELLOWEEN on Normal, 1,000 $HELLOWEEN on Nightmare, once per wallet each

  • The run must be on Normal or Nightmare and end with the final boss defeated. Easy never pays.
  • Your wallet must be seated before the host starts the run (it is, as soon as you joined with it).
  • You must actively play the run; idle or disconnected players are not eligible. Exactly: at the moment the boss falls you are connected and on your feet (being revived earlier is fine); you were connected for at least 70% of the run; on at least 30% of the time you were up, you actually did something (your hero moved, an arrow fired, you dashed or you were reviving a teammate; a key held against a wall does not count); and on the boss floor you damaged a boss or a monster, or revived a teammate.
  • Players who do not qualify still appear on the podium with their score. They just cannot claim the victory reward for that run.
  • Each wallet can claim the Normal victory once and the Nightmare victory once: at most 1,500 $HELLOWEEN per wallet from victories. The contract enforces that.

Daily: 25 $HELLOWEEN

  • Connect your wallet, play at least one run (3 minutes or one cleared floor) in the last 24 hours, then claim 25 $HELLOWEEN. The play must be with that wallet linked to your seat, and only active time counts.
  • 24 h cooldown counted from your own last daily claim (enforced by the contract, not by a website clock).
  • A global daily cap may fill up; then try after 00:00 UTC.
  • Plainly: someone with many wallets can play with each of them. The pool is finite, which is why the cap exists.

Always

  • You claim yourself and pay the gas. Nothing is pushed, sent or airdropped to anyone.
  • Rewards are paid from the reward pool contract. Amounts are fixed in the contract: 500 (Normal victory), 1,000 (Nightmare victory) and 25 (daily).

Claim the victory reward, step by step

  1. Win a Normal or Nightmare run as described above. The podium tells you whether your wallet was counted.
  2. Open the Claim page with the same wallet and sign in if asked.
  3. The Normal and Nightmare victory rows each show whether this wallet has a recorded win there and whether it already claimed.
  4. Press the claim button. The page asks the game server for a signed voucher and simulates the transaction first, so errors show before you pay.
  5. Confirm in your wallet. When the transaction is mined, the reward (500 or 1,000 $HELLOWEEN) is in your wallet and the claim appears on the explorer.

Claim the daily reward, step by step

  1. Play a run with your wallet linked (at least 3 minutes of active play or one cleared floor).
  2. Open the Claim page and sign in.
  3. The Daily box shows a timer if your cooldown is still running, or the claim button when you can claim.
  4. Press it, check the simulated result, and confirm in your wallet. The next daily opens 24 hours after this claim.

Gas

Claims are normal transactions on Robinhood Chain, paid in ETH by you. A claim is a small contract call, so a tiny amount of ETH on Robinhood Chain is enough; your wallet shows the exact fee before you confirm. Signing in costs nothing.

If the pool runs low

  • The reward pool only holds the $HELLOWEEN put into it. The Claim and Token pages show the live pool balance.
  • When the pool cannot cover a claim, the contract refuses it. The Claim page simulates first, so you see this before sending anything.
  • Nobody can withdraw tokens from the pool, not even the team: the owner can only pause claims or rotate the voucher signer. Tokens leave the pool only as rewards.

Install as an app

Helloween is a PWA: it can live on your home screen and open full screen. On Chrome, Edge and Android use the button below or the browser menu (“Install” / “Add to Home screen”). On iPhone and iPad: open the site in Safari, tap Share, then “Add to Home Screen”. You still need an internet connection to play, because the game runs on our server.

Safety

  • We never DM first. Nobody from Helloween will message you about rewards, support or “airdrops”.
  • Claiming never needs a token approval and never asks for your seed phrase. If anything asks you to approve spending or to type a seed phrase, close it.
  • The only token contract is the one on this site and on @helloweenapp. Right now it is 0xf0b6a8a4de27cd75245236f130bce3d25ad5636a.
  • Always check that you are on helloween.app before you connect a wallet.

What is on chain, and what is not

  • Not on chain: the game itself. Movement, monsters, riddles and scores run on our game server for speed and fairness. It is not a fully on-chain game.
  • On chain (Robinhood Chain): the $HELLOWEEN token, the reward pool contract, every claim, and the pool balance. The game server only signs vouchers; the contract checks them and enforces the amounts, the once-per-wallet-per-difficulty victory and the 24 h daily cooldown.
  • Planned, not built yet: the community vote on locking or burning the remaining developer tokens, on-chain seasons and an on-chain leaderboard (the current leaderboard is kept by the game server), cosmetics.
